Traffic Rules
Belarus has right-hand traffic. It uses road signs and traffic rules of international standard. The majority of road signs are written in the Cyrillic alphabet (Russian alphabet); the signs at main transport junctions are replicated in the Latin alphabet (English alphabet).
It is strictly forbidden to drive under the influence of alcohol. Speed limit in inhabited localities is 60km/h (37miles/hour), outside inhabited localities – 90 km/h (55 miles/hour). Some of motorways, of international significance as a rule, have established speed limits at the rate of 120 km/h (75 miles/hour). Radar speed control is applied. It is forbidden to use radar detectors.
In order to drive a vehicle in Belarus one should have the following documents: driving licence of international standard, technical passport, policy of obligatory motor third party liability insurance, certificate on passing through technical examination of a vehicle.
In the case of approaching vehicles with blue rotating beacon and special sound signal drivers of all transport means with no regard to their traffic direction should give the way and provide free passage of these and accompanied by them transport means.
In the case approaching vehicle has additional to blue rotating beacon red rotating beacon switched on, drivers of vehicles heading to the same direction and provided there is no separating strip drivers heading to the opposite direction, should pull over.
Right movement and right turn is forbidden when red light of a traffic light is on. Children under age of 12 are not allowed to sit on a front seat of a transport vehicle while driving.
Road police is shortly called ГАИ (Russian abbreviation) and ДАI (Belarusian variant). The ГАИ inspectors have uniform with yellow fluorescent strips. In order to stop a vehicle an inspector should point to the vehicle using a traffic baton (striped or with red light reflector). A vehicle is obliged to stop in the night-time only in the case an inspector is near the traffic police car with special identification marks.
