The perfusion of the heart with the drug causes the cessation of the mechanical and electrical activity of the heart and prevents damage to cells from total ischemia and subsequent reperfusion during restoration of cardiac blood flow. Used concentrations of cardioplegic solutions cause reversible stabilize of membranes cardiomyocytes and other cells which protects them from irreversible injury as the result of prolonged ischemia during surgery and subsequent reperfusion of the heart after removing the clamp from the aorta. The amount of calcium ions (Ca ++) in the solution ensures the sustentation of integrity of the cell membranes and prevents reperfusion injury of the myocardium, associated with excessive accumulation of calcium. Magnesium ions (Mg ++), contribute to stabilizing the membranes cardiomyocytes by inhibiting myosin phosphorylase, keeping reserves of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), necessary in step of postischemic activity. The concentration of potassium ions (K +) ensures a rapid cessation of myocardial contractile activity in diastole. Chloride (Cl-) and sodium ions (Na +) are important for maintaining the ionic integrity of myocardial tissue and maintaining electroneutrality of the solution.
